Diploma 2010 in Mendrisio – Architectural and urban transformations in the city of Varese
It’s been an intense year at the Architecture Academy of Mendrisio: 82 students from all over the world visited, discovered, investigated and studied the city of Varese. The results are not just the sum of many individual works, but a repertoire of proposals, ideas, interpretations, architectural and urban visions. At the Academy the students develop projects, focusing on a single territory each year. After Padua (2005), Venice (2006), Olten (2007), the ‘City Ticino’ and the new AlpTransit rail line (2008) and Lausanne (2009), this year’s territory of analysis and reflection is Varese. The lake, the railroad stations, the former Aermacchi factory, Piazza Repubblica, the Belforte cemetery, Palazzo Estense and Piazzale Staffora are the sites identified, with the support of municipal technicians. The ateliers are guided by professor-architects of international renown: Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus, Michele Arnaboldi, Martin Boesch, Esteban Bonell, Mario Botta, Marianne Burkhalter and Christian Sumi, Antonio Citterio, Marc-Henri Collomb, Quintus Miller, Valerio Oliati and Jonathan Sergison. In June the students presented their projects. The jury, chaired by Aurelio Galfetti, was joined by journalists from authoritative Italian magazines and by intellectuals like Carlo Bertelli and Philippe Daverio, to conduct a debate on the identity of a city. The relations between the Academy of Mendrisio and the city of Varese have been handled by Andrea Ciotti. Until 16 July it is possible to visit the exhibition with all the projects at the Galleria dell’Accademia and in the lobby (Palazzo Canavée, via Canavée 5, Mendrisio, Switzerland). The exhibition, with a new design, will also be seen at Villa Baragiola, Varese, in December 2010 – January 2011. www.varese110elode.ch.
