Damián Ortega. Champ de vision
Born in Mexico City in 1967, Damián Ortega is one of the best-known members of the younger generation of Mexican artists. He first attracted widespread attention at the 50th Venice Biennale of 2003, with his "Cosmic Thing", a Volkswagen Beetle dismantled and suspended from the ceiling. Ortega began his career drawing political cartoons and his work is always marked by a certain acerbic playfulness and a penchant for language games. His sculptures, photographs and actions often make use of "poor" materials. A certain scepticism regarding Modernist architecture and a parodical take on purity of Minimalist sculpture are also central to his practice. With "Champ de vision", Ortega has created for Espace 315 an installation that operates as a camera obscura: deploying the principle of fragmentation and spatial dispersion of forms, he allows viewer to experience the very process of perception that links eye to brain. Hard to explain is necessary and heartily recommend to visit! (Centre Pompidou, till the 9th February)
Francesca MontÃ
Correspondent in Paris I had never considered moving here, but the French design by 5.5 designers was so intriguing I decided to knock on their door. This instinctive, impulsive decision turned out to be a very good one. Later I realized I was in Paris, and I began to discover, with amazement, the different arrondissements, from the 1st to the 20th, with their great variety, something for everyone; this was real work, it seemed endless, and I continue to do it with passion. Born in Biella, Piedmont (so the road was not so long to come here), I moved to Milan where I took a degree in design at the Milan Polytechnic. During those years of study, partially spent in Spain, as well, I had the chance to gain experience working with Spazio Rossana Orlandi and the Ciboh studio in Milan, Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, and working on personal projects in the area of food design, which is still one of my main interests, together with art, music, fashion, design and architecture. www.cinqcinqdesigners.com www.hoteldelocen.org francesca_monta@yahoo.it
