Tim Parsons for Bloom at the SBC

A short while ago I attended the product launch for a new range of objects to be sold in the South Bank centre shopping area. The works ranges in scale and all took their lead from the centre itself, either by echoing decorative elements or referencing its musical heritage.

One of my favourites was the ceramic work of designer Tim Parsons.

The enormous pillars that support the centre create a half underground concrete landscape (often full of  skaters, bmx-ers and graffiti artists). Parsons drew his inspiration from the octagonal sections that support the centre- an element that most visitors would recognise but find difficult to place where they saw it. He then interpreted this form into a series of objects where the outer surface is textured and grey but the inner surfaces are a brilliant toffee-apple red glaze.

Other people who have also contributed to the shops wares include: Yayoi Kusama, Andrew Tanner, Ann Alleweireldt, Gilles Jones and Kathryn Marchbank. www.southbankcentre.co.uk www.timparsons.info

Shai Akram

Shai Akram – INTERNI World Design News – correspondent from London   British designer Shai Akram completed her MA in Design Products at the RCA in 2006. Since graduating, Shai has been working on projects in China and New Zealand before returning to London this summer.   Shai’s work is typified by a curiosity of industrial processes combined with a love of story telling. She explores the way that thoughtful detail design can make ordinary items and production methods into extra-ordinary objects.   Shai is based in London, working on freelance design projects and running a small design practice, ‘Studio of Two’, with fellow RCA graduate, Andrew Haythornthwaite. Shai’s work has been selected to appear in many international exhibitions and covers a wide cross section of projects: furniture, product, art direction and event design, as well as design research and running design workshops with Andrew. www.shaiakram.co.uk
